This is a descriptive study of the childhood-respiratory diseases in a primary health center (Consultorio Dr. Luis Sepúlveda and its rural post, Calera de Tango) in 1989. We took a 50% sample of the daily medical records using the International Classification of Health Problems in Primary Care (VIII and XVI). 53.9% of the children morbidity appointment ware for respiratory diseases, with the peak in June (72.5%), and being less frequent with age. The most frequent specific diagnosis were common cold (22%, asthmatic bronchitis (19.2%), pneumonia (14.9%) and acute bronchitis (14.8%), pneumonía being the most frequent between 1-2 years of age. The study confirms the local observation of the frequency and the severity of the problem. Itis necessary now to carry out aetiological studies and to implement facilities for prevention at a population level, early diagnosis and a adequate ambulatory treatment.
