Estudio de tabaquismo en siete ciudades chilenas

Results of tobacco smoking survey performed in 7 Chilean cities are presented in this report. In an aleatory sample of population (951 dwellings and 4.192 people) a survey of morbidity, medical care and tobacco and alcoholic beverages consumption and drug addiction was done. The surveys were performed 3 times during 1995 and 1996. In 60% out of all families, one or more smokers were found. The prevalence rate of smokers reached 39% in men and 27% in women. Average daily tobacco consumption was 5,9 units per person. Prevalence varied among the cities (25 to 44%). Special high prevalences were found in men and the group 20-29 years old (with almost 50% of smokers). No differences among income level groups were noticed. Only 6% of the population are former smokers with higher frequency among increasing age group. The existence of smokers in homes produces a significant increase of children’s acute respiratory illnesses. Prevalence figures in this study are similar to prevalence founded 10 years ago.
