Abstract

A quantitative study was carried out of the use of benzodiazepines and triciclic antidepressan in primary health care, covering health care centers of the Santiago Province. Metropolitan Region. The study is retrospective and year 1993 is quantified. The municipal health care centers, were stratified according to Health Service and 20% was randomly chosen. totalling 10 health care center. The measuring unit was the Definite Daily Dose tDDD) and, since this study deals with population, the DHD concept was utilized. Diazepam was present in the l00% of the health care centers unders study. Benzodiazepines constituted the most frequently used pharmacological groups, and the diazepam was the most frequentlv used drugs in the groups (2,10 DHD). Among the triciclic antidepressant was imipramine with 0,19 DHD. Most of the benzodiazepines and triciclic antidepressan in the correspond to those suggested by WHO, in the essential drugs listing for the care of mental health problems. and the results obteined was minor than the literature report.
