poor. The study was mainly focused on the movements observed among the categories by comparing the information obtained in 1990 and 1993. Thus, changes observed were contrasted with selected variables such as health care system, food withdrawal as part of the PNAC program, and nutritional status. Proportion of households under the poverty line decreased by 45%, as well as the malnutrition rate which was diminished by 51.6% during the study period. Also, the enrollment to private health care systems increased by 60.2%. With respect to food withdrawal from the PNAC program, a clear association between the socioeconomic changes and participation in such program was observed. The participation in the program was higher by those households below the poverty line. Such participation was decreasing according to the improvement of the socioeconomic condition. The results obtained in this study suggest that the households having greater needs participate more of the PNAC program. In addition the targeting mechanism —based on self exclusion— is in general terms, appropriate.
