The study has been directed to birthweight, relevant variable to forecast morbidity and mortality in newborns. Its determinants are biological, obstetrical and environmental, among them socio-economical level, a factor not too much studied. Birthweigth of 19.578 and 3.115 new boms in two public and two private hospitals during 1984 has been compared, from a sample of 5% and 20% respectively. Socio-economic level was much lower in public maternities and also its mean birthweight, as compared to private institutions, 3.18l g and 3.317 g respectively. Birthweight was incremental according to age of the mothers. four years higher in private hospitals, 30 and 26 years respectively. The present analysis should be completed with the study of parity and other obstetrical and biological factors, in order to get more definitive conclusions.
