Abstract

According to previous evidences; the smoking habit in Chile usually begins during the adolescence or in young adult population. For such a reason we studied the total number students of a public university school. An anonymous interview previously validated was used in 680 students. Smoking prevalence was 49.9% being similar in both sexes and increasing with the age of the students. Smoking habits was not related with material status or working activities outside the university school, nor with the parental educational level, the condition of married of separated parents, or the quality of the family relationship. An the other hand, smoking habit was closely associated with the frequency and amount of alcohol consumption and the daily use of the other dependence generating chemical substances, emphasizing the existence of a common trait in smokers with other chemical dependences.
