Abstract

Reproductive health survey on young adults in Greater Santiago, based on a probabilistic, selfweighted sample of households was done in 1988. The objective was to determine frecuency of pregnancies in this group, characteristics of first and last one, besides proportion of prenatal care and breast feeding. 24.3% of the total have been pregnant, 71,4% has one child and 25,7% two. Mean age at 1st. birth was 17 for adolescents. 40% of the births were unplanned, raising to 50% in premarital pregnancies. The last live birth had e same characteristic in 38,8%. Better education and high maternal age determined higher frequencies of unplanned children. 98,3% had prenatal care, with early control in 72,0% of them. 94,4% breast fed their children; 69,7% during 6 months and 49,0% for a year.
