Chilean Health, Trends in Health, Health CareAbstract
In this paper, the main features of the Chilean health situation today, and the expected trends during the next decade are outlined. Although there has been progress in maternal and child health, it is important to note that the problems of mental health and the mortality rates for the main adult diseases have not Changed since the last decade. It seems unlikely that in the next few years there will be important progress made either in the infant mortality, given its causes today, or in those diseases related to the genetic and racial structure of the Chilean population, or to particular environmental factors. However, the AA predict an increase in those problems related to ageing, unless there are significant changes in the Chilean life-style. The health service will have to face a notable increase in health care demands and cost. Finally, the appearance of AIDS illustrates how new problems arise which are difficult to control, and present a challenge to the health service.
