A review of Chilean social laws that protect mother and child is presented. First, a conceptual and historical background of the social security system is given. Secondly, the more important benefits of 1988 legislation are described, taking into consideration labor, social, economic and health aspects. Four areas are presented: Protection of maternal-child health, protection for the working mother, family health care and some regulation that protect minors in special situations. Finally, some comments are made on the reasonability of health professional in these matters.
