Given the absence of up-to-date information about the non-medical area, research is carried out on health check-ups and control by nurses and midwives and on the respective professional and ancillary nursing resources. This is done for the period 1965-1984 and compared to the ten-year periods 1965-1974 for all the country’s regions. Data is statistically analyzed by computer processing. In the reference period, service given by nurses and midwives in relation to the total assisted population increased from 9.7 to 33.7 per 100 inhabitants, and from 37.0 to 1 23.0 per 100 women of child bearing age. This represents an increase of 247,4% and 323, 7 respectively. Resources available in 1984 ammounted to 2.3 nurses, 1.6 midwives and 19.7 ancillary nurses per 10.000 inhabitants. This means an increase of 76.9%, 77.8% and 68,4% respectively, as compared to 1965. The situation described for the country at large is differently expressed according to regions. We find that the areas with the most difficulty in satisfying the growing demand for medical attention are the regions of Atacama, Coquimbo and Libertador General Bernardo O’Higgins, as far as nursing resources are concerned. In the case of midwifery resources, however, the regions most affected are Atacama, Coquimbo, Valparaiso, Libertador General Bernardo O’Higgins, Bio-Bio and Metropolitana.
