Abstract

The mortality rate due to the three most common. cancers in Chile is analysed (gastric, pulmonary and biliary cancer). While gastric cancer has notaly decreased between 1970 and 1985 (from 32.7 to 18.6 in 100.000). The incidence of pulmonary cancer has risen› slightly (from 7.6. to 10.7), and biliary cancer has an extraordinary increment (from 3.7 to 9.4). The study of these trends, together with the absence of effective control programs, indicate that the tendency will remain the same for the next 10 years. This in turn will invert the relative incidence of these three cancers, making biliary cancer the main cause of oncological mortality. In addition, the implication for wo- men is even more drastic as presently, since 1985, biliary cancer is the first cause of death by cancer surpassing gastric, uterine and breast cancer.
