This is a study of the impact of the earthquake of 3rd March 1985 in Chile. We compared the damage in the whole of the disaster area to the damage in the Rengo community situated 128 kilometers south of the capital, and we describe the health service provided by the Campaign Hospital during the period of the catastrophe in this community. The number of cases of typhoid fever and hepatitis notified in 1985 were compared to those notified during the previous year in Rengo.
