A case-controlled study was performed in the department of surgery of the teaching hospital of the University of Chile. The frequency of use of oral contraceptives in women with a post-operative diagnosis of gallstones was compared with that of an age-matched group of women without gallstones who were hospitalized for other reasons in the same department. The first analysis of this study shows that the proportion of OC users is 2.5 times greater in patients with gallstones reaching a relative risk value of 3.8. There were no differences between the subjects and their controls that could be potentailly confounding variables, such as the social-economic level, marital status, nutritional status, blood pressure, age of menarche or menopauses, age of first sexual intercourse, race parity or smoking habits. AI most half the cases presented with biliary symptoms in the first year of oral contraceptive use. The results are discussed emphasizing the importance of such a finding in Chile, where the incidence of gallstones is extremely high.
