Abstract

Smoking habits during pregnancy and the effects on the birth weight were studied in a group of 232 women who live in rural areas and attended the ante-natal clinics in the health centres of Doñi hue and Coltauco and in the hospital of Coinco, during the second half of 1986. The following conclusion are drawn: 1. The percentage of women who smoke during pregnancy is extremely low (9.5%). 2. Women start smoking early in life. 3. Smoking had a significant effect on birth weight; the majority of women who smoked during pregnancy had babies weighing less than 3 kg.
