We describe the bio-demographical characteristics of the population attending the Department of Psychiatry in Concepcion Hospital and the results of treatment of 182 year. The information was obtained from the clinical notes and the treatment records and was processed by computer. The treatment evaluated was varied and consisted of behavioral and psychosocial technique after drug therapy during the period of detoxication. The bio-demographical features showed that the characteristics of the alcoholic patient are simi lar to those found by other Chilean authors, and the most striking finding was the high percentage (50%) of social con consequences for the alcoholic. Our results, measured by the percentage of abstinence at 6 and 12 months, are better than those published by others (46.88% at 12 moths). This is explained by the regular use of environmental management and group education techniques associated with any behavioral therapy, which increased by 100% the results of any isolated behavioral therapy. The efficacy of isolated behavioral techniques improved with the association of one of the psycho- social techniques mentioned, and reached its maximum with the use of all three.
