Abstract

Through demographic data analysis, characteristics of adolescent population 0 to 19 years according to age, sex, marital status, level of instruction and economic activity, and its relationship pith population changes are described. The adolescent group comprises 22% of total population. The rate of dependence from the 20 to 64 years’ group reaches 42,5%. 95,7% of adolescents are single. Considering the labor force they represent 21% which is a figure 55% lower than the one observed in 1952. 72% of adolescents are registered at the regular school system. Comparing basic and secondary schools a rate of 45% of dropping-out is found. Mortality rate is 10 times lower than the rate for all ages, being accidents the most important cause with 50% of all deaths. The adolescents’ contribution to the mean size of families is 0,3 children which is the same figure for the last 30 years. 96% of births concentrates in 2. Infant Mortality Rate is the highest for children born to adolescent mothers, especially when she is not married. 94,5 abortions per 1.000 live births and 4,1 induced abortion per 1.000 women under 20 years of age are registered.
