Secondary and Tertiary Prevention on Alcoholism at the Primary level of the Health System in the South Service of the Metropolitan Health Service is performed by a team composed by physicians, social workers and nurses at 19 Health Centers. A special Committee on Mental Health supervises and teaches local teams and also coordinates Primary with Secondary and Tertiary levels. An evaluation comprising 470 patients who entered the program the first semester of 1983 is presented. Five cross sectional evaluations were performed every 6 months. Untill June 30th 1985 treatment had failed in 42,9% of patients 1,9% had presented recurrences, 9,1% had not 5,5% were dead. In 30,8% treatment had been successful (14% were in abstinence and 16,2% had been discharged).
