Abstract

Prevalence and characteristics of alcohol con students in a Chilean rural community (Coltauco, VI Region) are studied through a survey self- administered. The conclusions were the following:
— 89% of the students state to have drunk alcohol, half of them before 10 years of age.
— The main reasons mentioned to have drunk alcohol are the pleasure produced and need of imitation.
— “Chicha” (fermented grape juice) is the alcoholic beverage mostly used.
— 15% of the students were induced to drink through a friend and l0 0/o through the father. .
— 52% declare that the father is an alcoholic drinker; 16% a heavy drinker and 37% a moderate drinker.
