Keywords:
Infant Mortality Rate, Maternal EducationAbstract
Annual Infant Mortality Rates for the period ì 969-1980 in Chile Are calculated from information of the National Institute of Statistic, according to level of maternal education. Four categories of maternal instruction are considered: none basic, secondary and superior education. A change in the structure of births is demostrated with an increase of new borns in the group of lower risk of death that explains 24.4% of the decrease in Infant Mortability Rate in Chile during the studied period. Differentials of mortality between the extreme groups have increased due to a slower reduction of death risk in the category of mothers with no education, making the risk that was 4 times as high in 1973, 5 times as high in 1979-1980. However, children born to mothers eligible for benefits in the National Systems of Health Services have reached higher reductions in mortality, equivalents to the children of the belter level of live.
