Abstract

Some historical features and the present situation of the University of Chile School of Public Health are summarized in this paper. The School has a great deal of teaching activities with more than one thousand graduate students attending different courses or seminars with three master programs (Public Health, Biostatistics and Health Administration), two Licenciatures and many courses given in Santiago and in other cities of the country. Teaching activities in the School of Medicine and other schools are also an important part of the School tasks. Research activities have produced during the last five years a total of 278 papers in journals or as book Chapters. A great number of institutions have consultant services from the School. As far as international activities are concerned, the School in 1984 received 37 foreign studies coming from 12 countries; members of the Faculty are requested as consultants or advisors by W.H.O., P.A.H.O. or other international agencies, and the Kellogg Foundation gives an important help for the developing of primary care and health administration programs. The problems that usually face the Schools of Public Health in America are discussed, showing the ways to solve them at the Chilean school.
