El hábito de fumar de la mujer y sus modificaciones con el embarazo

A group of 845 pregnant women was studied in relation ship with their smoking habit before and during pregnancy using the basic form of the American Cancer Society. A 58% out of all this group of young women smokers falling the rate to 26% during pregnancy.
Smoking persons were mainly single women under 35 years of age with a low level of concern for the negative effects of tobacco parallel to low degree of education. No significatn relation-ship was found with social security group, number of children or nutritional condition of women.
Smoking during pregnancy appears directly associated to the number of daily cigarettes before the gestational status began. A significant degree of change was found in women with high education level, low number of children, the condition of wanted child and the level of concern about tobacco risks.
The smoking habit of women in Santiago, the importance of pregnancy as a moment for ending the habit and the required educational efforts for controlling this problem in Chile are discussed in this paper.
