This report describes the prevalence of abnorma ingest of alcholic beverage tho adolescents, student or the third year of bish schist et cation in prig it and public school in he district of Santiago. If der to collaborate to the primary prevention in the problem. The sample corresponds to 75.5% (6431 or pupils enrolled in 8 schools: 269 young men 1634 plo) and 155 women (36.5%). 78.8% of al of them were aged of 16 and 17 years. The information was gathered through an auto. administered inquiry (Test for Selection of habitual drinkers, elaborated according to the Michigan Al. coholism Screening Test (M.A.S.T.). A prevalence of abnormal drinkers was obtained for an 8%; for 50.5% of moderate drinkers, and for 41.5% of abstemious persons. Of the studied population, 12,3% of abnormal drinkers belonged to the masculine sex and 0.6% to the feminine sex. Of the total sum of abnormal drinkers, 97% were men. 47% of this group of abnormal drinkers were aged of 16 years. With regard to the type of college, the proportion of abnormal drinkers is similar for both private and public schools; but public lyceums have a higher prevalence of abstemious, while the private lyceums. have a prevalence of moderate drinkers. The principal reason adduced for the first ingesta of alcohol by abnormal drinkers was a "personal initiative" in 55.9%. As for repeated ingesta, 70.6% of this group declared to do this "by pleasure".
