This article analyzes the theoretical foundations of Listening Circles—based on Integrative Community
Therapy (ICT)—and develops new conceptual influences that allow us to understand its value as a com-
munity therapeutic tool. Along with reviewing the original principles of the model it addresses contemporary
perspectives on the social construction of meaning, the importance of language in generating shared
understanding, the dialogical function of listening, and a critique of clinical approaches that reduce distress to
individual variables ignoring its sociocultural dimension. Also the consistency of this methodology with WHO
and MINSAL guidelines on community health, self-determination, and mutual support is highlighted.
Based on these frameworks, the article describes how Listening Circles facilitate emotional expression,
active listening, and the highlighting of lessons learned from personal life experiences, through a horizontal
dynamic that values individual and community knowledge.
The article concludes that this methodology is a relevant community tool for promoting emotional well-being
and social cohesion and identifies the following challenges: training more faciitators, expanding Listening
Circles and strengthening research on their impact on individuals and communities.
