Abstract

In the last few years it has been possible to elucidate one of the greatest debts that the medical profession in Chile has, regarding a population that has long been invisible and harmed: the trans population. There have been some advances from civil society, such as the promulgation of a law project, the Gender Identity Law, and the work that foundations for trans adults, and for children and adolescents as well, have been carrying out. Specific healthcare needs for trans people on the public health system are recognized; despite this, these benefits are only available for some people in our country. The medical opinion is considered transcendental for the accompaniment during the different stages of transition. However, the question is whether this medical accompaniment is indispensable, when requesting the recognition of gender identity in the legal scenario, which is a universal human right.
