Characterization and health of the Haitian population in Peumo borough, Chile

Introduction: Chile has experienced a significant increase in the Haitian international migrant population in recent years, who face various challenges in accessing health. In the Peumo borough of Region VI of Chile, the majority of the migrant population comes from Haiti. The aim of this article is to characterize the Haitian population resident in the Peumo borough and explore their health needs. Methodology: Quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study. A survey was designed and applied with the objective of conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the Haitian population residing in Peumo, Chile. Questions about living conditions, migratory process, support networks and health status were included. The written questions focused on general health and well-being needs. A descriptive analysis of the quantitative information was carried out and the written questions were analyzed using the General Inductive Approach. Results: A total of 83 people participated, of which the majority was male, working and active, with an average age of 30,73 years. Among the main results it is observed that although the majority indicates not having chronic disease (80,6%), 37% indicate that they do not have a health insurance. Likewise, 31.4% live in medium or critical overcrowding. Discussion and conclusions: The Haitian population faces various challenges to obtain a good quality of life in the country. This survey allowed to raise information about the Haitian population, in order to advance towards the development of culturally relevant initiatives.
