My experience as a general practitioner in Calbuco

Abstract

Interestingly, the experiences presented by several rural general practitioners are closely connected with the Tenth Region of the country and, particularly, with the province of Chiloé. It is likely that its renowned magic fills the spirits of the people who come to work in such places or that the incredible resilience of the inhabitants encourages admiration, contemplation, and deep commitment to them. My experiences are presented through a personal and descriptive account with some results of our work in the hospital and in the community. Modernization, with its strengths and weaknesses, fades the flame of Chiloé’s magic, but there is still a strong feeling that, despite everything, working with its people produces an enchantment that lasts forever.
