Nowadays, health systems have been overwhelmed by the health needs of the population. To tackle this situation, it is essential, besides improving clinical care processes, to promote research and innovation. Given the complexity of the problem, it is vital to integrate the various actors of health, where hospitals have a privileged position with the possibility of organizing the clinical staff, the academia, the health authorities, the private sector, and the community. In the following article, a simple literature review about the role of hospitals regarding research and innovation in health will be presented, expounding the potential benefits for the generation of health knowledge and for the improvement of the nursing role of these institutions. Based on this, we expose the need to generate Research and Development Units in hospital institutions, incorporating professionals trained in science and management, with an approach of science applied to clinic that includes the local community in their work. The experience of Hospital El Carmen de Maipú regarding this matter is presented.
