Abstract

This article provides information about the origins of the new, for the country, post graduate medical education program in Emergency Medicine. The start of this program in 1994, is related with the severe crisis of the Emergency Units of the main metropolitan hospitals in 1992, a situation that was reported in due time to the Ministry of Health by the Chilean Medical Association. In 2004, the program was updated through a new agreement between the Ministry of Health and the University of Chile, the Catholic University and the University of Santiago on the other hand. In spite of this agreement, many problems remain. This article contains a new proposal, addressed to the relevant parties, and intended to bring about a future reinforcement and development of the program.
