Abstract

Environmental pollution as a result of power generation is a Fact. A well-known fact. This paper reviews the main pollutants resulting from thermoelectric generation en Chile, as well as which ones are regularly monitored in the country. It also informs about Chilean and PAHO/WHO norms, revealing that with one exception, all other norms (MP, SO2, NO2 and O3) are much more permissive in the country. Than advised by those UN organizations. As a result, national monitoring appears acceptable or normal, data which are included in the paper. Finally, the article presents cost information about environmental pollution derived from the study on “Social Benefits of atmospheric pollutants reduction in the Metropolitan Region” (Santiago, 2001).
