In Chile, a substantial part of the administration of social security is in the hands of private companies. The paper relates and summarizes data pertaining to the administrators of pension funds, to life insurance companies, to private health insurers and to the large health care providers. It indicates their main ownership links and the magnitude of the financial resources involved. A brief reference is made to the situation of the armed forces and to the treatment given to workers’ accidents and occupational diseases.Some of the implications of the situation for the population and for the national social security policies are discussed.
