Based on data from the Annual Demographic Reports of Chile, this paper describes the demographic transition evidenced by the decreasing trend, between 1980 and 1985, of the general birth and death rates: births have come down from 21.5 to 18.3 per thousand population, and deaths, from 4.3 to 3.6 per thousand. In keeping with the epidemiological transition currently under way, cardiocirculatory diseases, neoplasms, respiratory diseases and injuries now account for 72% of all deaths.
