Abstract

Changes occurring in the lasts decades, both in society and in medicine, has established new ethical contexts for health delivery. Decisions on how to promote health, take care of diseases and rehabilitate individuals to attain a better quality of life, does not depend only on the advances in knowledge and a wider scientific information, or the amount of resources that can be offered and used by institutions and nations, but on the correct balance of principles and values that people and communities have about these issues. To find an holistic solution for health care models, to review this matters seems mandatory. A very relevant subject is equity. Other matters include the apparent opposition between quality and efficiency; the significance of cost contention and reducing health benefits, managing preferently specific problems and opening communication channels in health areas. Finally, a relevant aspect is posed by internationalization and globalization phenomenons, on accreditation of professionals that come from different institutions and countries, with various educational backgrounds, that must demonstrate that their capacities, knowledges and skills, are appropriate to best serve the health care needs of the society.
