Abstract

The University of Chile started its history in Family Medicine as a medical speciality, and in Family Health, as a health delivery model, in 1981. Since the University can show many achievements: the foundation of the Department of Preventive and Community Care, in charge of the development of Family Medicine; a growing group of teachers in the discipline who serve as model to under - and postgraduate students; contribution in a consultant and teaching role to health teams who are in the process of change of their Consultorios to Family Health Center; collaboration and advisor role to Primary Care Departments in the Health Service or Municipality (County); and recognition of the quality of the Resident Program in General Family Medicine. The Resident Program is of three years, spending more than half of their time in Family Medicine. The training involves the clinical training in primary care, the family approach, public health and personal development. The rest consists of clinical rotations to improve the resolution level.
