The University of Chile, Faculty of Medicine, began in 1998, the first course of a new curriculum oriented to a major social relevance of medicine, to enhance the clinical competences and abilities of “learning to learn” of graduates. The article describes the process of curricular change: actualization of professional profile, reorganization of content materia in 6 subsystems and new courses design, a program for Faculty development in more active learning metodologies, a tutorial program for the personal growth of students and organization of non hospital academic clinical setting in a Department of Community Medicine.
