Resumo

The proposal of this study was to know the adult and pediatric psychiatric consultation in a rural hospital in the VIII Region, Chile. A descriptive study with the diagnosis and characteristics of the respective patients was carried out during the second semester of 1989. The adult psychiatric pathology corresponded to 12,4% of the consultation, being Psychosomatic Pathology and Neurosis the most frequent ones. On the other hand, only 0,69% pediatric consultation corresponded to the surveyed pathology, being Enuresis and Attention Deficit Disorder the most important ones. The results of this study agrees with the national and foreign research’s. The lack of mental disorders diagnosis mainly in children is due to the insufficient training of the primary care physician in mental health, which does not allow to give the patients an integral attention.
