Abstract

Definitions of goiter and endemic goiter, according to criteria given by WHO are revised.
Ethiology including environmental as well as genetic factors is pointed out, describing the importance of endemic goiter and its prevention.
The problem in Chile is analyzed under the perspective of an extended bibliography the unfruitfulness of the efforts in prevention due to deffects in the process of inriching salt with iodine is commented.
Measures to correct those effects and to allow a solution to endemic goiter as a Public Health problem are proposed.
