Abstract

This study states the need to modify the curriculum of medical studies in order to adequately prepare human resources for the Primary level of care. Changes introduced by the East Division of the Faculty of Medicine (Universidad de Chile) are described. Among these changes a "Course of Introduction to Primary Care" (2nd. year medical students), a"Course of Interventions. in Mental Health" (5th. year medical syudents) and other elements of psychosocial aspects in the clinical ears and in the internship are described. "To follow, two types of Postgraduate Programs, both delivered in 1981 and 1984 are described: a "Program of Training in Basic Psychiatry" for general practitioners, and a "Program of Training in Psychosocial aspects" for residents in General/ Family Medicine. The importance of an active teaching-learning process instead of a theoretical and passive teaching ins emphazysed, as well as the usefülness of integration among specialists in clinical abd social-behavioral sciences. The importance of maintaining the humanist vocational attitude of service from the beginning of medical studies is discussed.
